How to Test Your Hair Porosity

It only takes a minute — all you need is a glass of water and a single strand of your hair.

1

Start clean: Take a freshly washed, product-free hair strand.

2

Drop it in water: Place the strand in a clear glass of room-temperature water.

3

Read the result: If it floats → Low Porosity. If it sinks slowly → Normal Porosity. If it sinks quickly → High Porosity.

4

Choose your match: Select the scalp oil tailored to your porosity for balanced, healthy hair.

What is Hair Porosity?

Hair porosity describes your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. It depends on how open or closed the cuticle layer of your hair strand is – and this directly affects how your hair responds to products. Knowing your porosity is the key to choosing the right oils and treatments for healthier, stronger, and more balanced hair.

Low Porosity

Low porosity hair has tightly closed cuticles. Moisture and oils find it harder to penetrate, which often makes the hair feel like products just sit on the surface. It may take longer to dry after washing, and heavy products can easily build up.

What it needs: Lightweight, penetrating oils that gently nourish without weighing the hair down.

Normal (Medium) Porosity

Normal porosity hair has a well-balanced cuticle structure. It absorbs and retains moisture effectively, and responds well to most products. This hair type usually feels soft, healthy, and is easier to maintain.

What it needs: A balanced blend of oils that protect, strengthen, and keep the natural moisture cycle stable.

High Porosity

High porosity hair has raised or damaged cuticles that let moisture in quickly, but also lose it just as fast. Hair may feel dry, frizzy, or prone to breakage. It often tangles easily and absorbs products rapidly.

What it needs: Rich, sealing oils that help lock in hydration, reduce frizz, and strengthen the hair’s structure.
